The Muslim community in Canterbury is concentrated in Christchurch. According to the 2013 census the population of Muslims was recorded as 3250, which equates to 0.6% of the regions population. Our community is diverse and many are migrants, with anecdotal suggestions that 40 nationalities are present here. There are several mosques or community centres in Christchurch and other services such as Halal butchers and food outlets. In terms of employment, several Muslim specific jobs such as Halal slaughter are available and many service and trades businesses are currently operating as well as professionals and a large number of students at local Universities.

CMCT was founded to progress the work of the Canterbury Building Bridges Muslim Advisory Group (CBBMAG) which was established to support our local Muslim community through fact finding, community engagement and liaison with government (specifically Office of Ethnic Affairs) and other support agencies. CMCT carries on this work with ongoing research into understanding our communities needs, then finding ways to address issues facing individuals and the group as a whole. |
